The CAUSES
What Causes Cataract?
A small portion of the lens of the eye may become clouded as we age due to clumping of proteins that make up the lens. This causes blurred or tinted vision. A cataract is the result! Some diseases or behaviors may increase your risk of developing cataracts, but most cataracts are due to old age. One can develop a cataract if they suffer from diabetes, smoke, drink alcohol, or spend a lot of time in the sun. Consult an ophthalmologist if you are experiencing cataract symptoms.
Cataract Treatment
Symptoms of early cataracts can often be treated very easily. When these treatments fail to improve vision problems caused by cataracts, surgery is the only effective solution. Better lighting, magnifying lenses, and sunglasses are all easy ways to improve vision.
In most cases, cataract removal surgery is only required if the symptoms of the cataract interfere with normal activities like driving, reading, or looking at computer or video screens even with glasses. The risk of injury from cataracts is small, so waiting for a convenient time to have surgery is not a problem.
Cataract Surgery
The removal of cataracts is the most common eye surgery today. Ophthalmologists remove the clouded lens of the eye and replace it with a clear artificial lens during cataract surgery. In most cases, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and takes no more than an hour. Two cataracts are usually treated four to eight weeks apart if they are present in both eyes.
Patients are given numbing eye drops and sedatives before surgery. One of two methods is employed to remove the cataract after the surgeon makes a small incision in the eye:
- The surgeon uses ultrasonic waves to break the lens down into liquid form in phacoemulsification, the most common method. Suction is used to remove the emulsified lens from the eye.
- The surgeon makes a larger incision and manually breaks the lens into smaller pieces, which are then removed from the eye through the incision.
